Close to Home | copper, enamel, brass | 2022

This brooch was made out of recycled, repurposed, and foraged materials. The enamel was made from sifted dirt and sand from a parking lot near my house, the metals were all repurposed scrap, and the fur was collected from an empty lot in my neighborhood as well. This piece is worn as a brooch, and thus implicates the wearer in the food chain it depicts. This piece deals with the ways that we are inherently connected to life which exists around us, and challenges the idea that human actions dont impact even animals which might outwardly benefit from our encroachment.

Placelet | 2022 | silver, bits, and bobs
The things set in this bracelet all come from the same vacant lot that the rabbit fur for Close to Home came from. All of these items were gathered from a vacant lot that I walk by every morning. The goal of this piece is not only to make these items into a wearable version of the place, but also to elevate them as a jewel would be valued. I found that it was a good reminder to look for beauty in unexpected places.
